The Iron Lady is a biographical drama film of the life of Baroness Margaret Thatcher. The narrative focuses on an aging Thatcher with fading health, reflectively looking back on her life and career. It was ambitious of the film directors to try and incorporate so many facets of Thatcher's life into a single feature film. This is because several aspects of her life are significant enough to be separate films. For example her rise within the Conservative Party as a female politician or the Falklands War both contain enough depth to be standalone movies. Notwithstanding this the viewer is presented with numerous major events in Thatcher's life such as: her admittance to Oxford University as the daughter of a green grocer, her progression as a Conservative Member of Parliament, tenure as Leader of the Opposition, and eleven years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The marketing of Australia as a desired tourist destination for Americans was somewhat cultivated by Paul Hogan's larrikin persona television advertisements, which aired in the United States during the 1980s. To date only one Australian has played the part of Ian Fleming's James Bond 007, which occurred in the 1969 film On Her Majesty's Secret Service where George Lazenby starred as 007. S.E. Hinton

During the 1990s there was multiple S.E. Hinton books on Australian High School English reading lists. Her book That Was Then, This Is Now was on the Year 8 book list in 1993, and The Outsiders was on the Year 9 book list in 1994. I read and studied both of these books and Hinton (pictured above) quickly became a source of writing inspiration for me, as her five young adult books have a focus on wayward youths and their social and personal development towards adulthood. I could relate to many of the rebellious characters in her books and their misadventures and progression certainly made for good reading, at a time when I read few books. Hinton's first book The Outsiders was published in 1967 when she was 17-years old. As a teenager the idea of writing novels suddenly didn't seem like just the work of greying adults, knowing that Hinton was only two years older than me when the book was published. She is one of my biggest writing influences and I own all of her adult and young adult books. Palahniuk also entertains the reader with a combination of crude and philosophical humour, and anatomical descriptions of characters and their behaviour that cause out loud laughter. Tim Winton's Cloudstreet TV series

Cloudstreet captures the story of two very different Australian families, living under one roof, and their colourful lives are both tragic and inspiring. Underbelly IV: Razor

Australian TV needs more quality local drama

Australian television appears to be in decline with the cessation of four drama themed programs in the last year. Sea Patrol produced by Hal McElroy, Rush produced by John Edwards and Christopher Lee, and Rescue: Special Ops and Wild Boys both programs produced by Julie McGauran and Sarah Smith have all come to an end. Given the number of police drama genre shows that have faced the axe in the last decade, including: Water Rats, Young Lions, Blue Heelers and White Collar Blue, and more recent ones mentioned above, it seems that this genre is failing to win ratings. I am amazed by the willingness of producers to continue to return to this genre, which too often has a similar narrative with action, affairs / romance, and a season ending character death recycled over and again. The Underbelly franchise is a ray of light, as true crime genre is providing a rich narrative, and is successfully satisfying the appetites of viewers for more. Australian TV shows all face the same issues with funding, and usually rely on a consortium of backers, including: State Governments, Screen Australia, television networks, and private funding. However, given the collective approach, it begs the question why there is a continued pattern of drama that at times lacks quality story. The solution is not a complex one, as there is no shortage of Australian literature, sporting heroes, social identities, and historical events to base quality drama television on. The adaptation of Tim Winton's novel Cloudstreet to a television series is an example of what Australia needs more of. Also, Underbelly has confirmed that a new theme each season is an approach that can attract higher viewing ratings. A Cadel Evans cycling to victory series could be one of Australia's best sporting genre works since Bodyline. Australia is rich with stories and I hope that TV Producers bring more to our screens. Connecticut Experience

Connecticut became the 16th U.S. State I have visited to date. Chris R. Vaccaro and I made the trip by car from Long Island New York to Danbury Connecticut on October 22, 2011. We visited his brother Bryan who is attending Western Connecticut State University, and with a bit of luck he might play baseball in the Sydney Major League or the Sydney Winter Baseball League. We also had a look at Danbury Fair Shopping Mall, which is the second largest in Connecticut. The leafy green scenery certainly makes it a pretty state to visit. Liberty Island Experience

During my third visit to New York City in just over a year, I finally made it to Liberty Island on October 21, 2011. It was fantastic to set foot on one of America's most iconic landmarks. I took the ferry from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan, and enjoyed a comfortable journey across New York Harbour. The hustle and bustle of New York City was a noticeable contrast to the gentle quiet on Liberty Island. Hofstra University: Digital Media Class

On October 20, 2011 I was honoured to take a class at Hofstra University as a guest presenter, and the lesson was Chris R. Vaccaro's Digital Media class. I began by asking the students for one word that can make a career in the media distinctive. The word I was looking for was initiative and this became the focus of our first activity. I used Australian Journalist Wilfred Burchett as an example of how initiative can make a career; with his September 5, 1945 story "The Atomic Plague" which covered the aftermath of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima. As an activity I screened the first 15 - 20 minutes of David Bradbury's documentary A Biography of Wilfred Burchett: Public Enemy Number One. The students were instructed to put themselves in Burchett's shoes and to identify current digital media tools they would use to cover the story. They were also encouraged to suggest different approaches they would take to the story, and I was impressed by their enthusiastic engagement. The second task was to analyse a recent extract from Australian Network Ten News Sydney, which was the Soap Box segment from September 1, 2011 on gambling reforms, and to comment on the ways digital media is used for this program. The students became absorbed with numerous excellent points of discussion. It was a highly enjoyable afternoon and I wish the class well with their future studies. A special thank you to Chris R. ABL 2011 / 2012: "Lets grow baseball!"

The 2011 / 2012 Australian Baseball League season begins in less than one week, and supporters of the game are going to be treated to a summer of exciting play. I have come up with an unofficial slogan for this season, which is "lets grow baseball!" Fans are the most important stakeholders to any sport, and that's why patrons of baseball should aim to introduce one new person to the ABL this year. It could be a friend, a work colleague or a family member who you choose to take to the ballpark for the first time. So please play your part and "lets grow baseball!" James Beresford: Brotherly Baseball

It seems that baseball players who come from a family that plays the game benefit from kin tuition. Craig Shipley and Dave Nilsson became the second and third Australians to play Major League Baseball, and they also have in common a family background with a strong involvement in the sport. James Beresford (pictured above) is currently a prospect in the Minnesota Twins Farm System where he has played since 2007. He spent the 2011 season playing High A Ball and finished the year with 131 hits and a .270 batting average. His older brother Simon epitomises the definition of a big brother standing at 6' 5", he played within the Milwaukee Brewers Farm System from 2003 to 2005. James has pursued a career as an infielder and Simon was a pitcher. There is no doubt that Simon was able to pass on valuable knowledge to James with respect to professional baseball life, and I'm sure James was able to see some great pitchers from his brother, which helped advance his skills as a hitter. Liam Hendriks: Minnesota Twins

Liam Hendriks (pictured above) has become the 31st Australian to play Major League Baseball. In the process he has helped make further history by becoming the seventh Australian to play for the Minnesota Twins, which to date is the most of any team in the Major Leagues, and he has become the tenth Australian to appear in the 2011 MLB season. The previous record for number of Australians to appear in one season was eight in 2008 (G.Balfour, B. Harman, J. Huber, P. Moylan, R. Rowland-Smith, C. Snelling, P. Stockman, and R. Thompson). He is also the first Australian since Brad Thomas, during the 2010 MLB season, to start a Major League game as a pitcher. Hendriks made his debut on September 6, 2011, at Target Field in Minneapolis. He pitched seven complete innings, striking out four, with four hits, and three earned runs. The Twins lost the game 3 - 0 and Hendriks was the pitcher of record for the loss, but his debut has confirmed his worthiness at the Major League level. The Qantas Australian Wallabies have broken a decade long drought by winning the Rugby Union Tri Nations last night in Brisbane. Their 25 - 20 victory over the New Zealand All Blacks confirms the Wallabies as a genuine threat for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, which will be played in New Zealand from September 9 to October 23, 2011. To date the Rugby World Cup has been won by Southern Hemisphere countries five times out of a possible six. Australia has a chance to be the first country to claim three World Cup victories having previously been the winner in 1991 and 1999. The film contains 58 quality minutes and represents Wilfred Burchett honestly. Despite the many vicious accusations that were thrown at Burchett this documentary confirms his calm and professional composure. It is clear that Burchett opposed war as a way to impose foreign policy, and that he supported the rejection of imperialism. There is no doubt that Burchett was interested in ideology from the left, yet he didn't deny its faults or speak overtly negatively of capitalism. Wests Tigers claw the Parramatta Eels

The Tigers have made it six wins in a row by defeating the Parramatta Eels 31 - 12. Benji Marshall is continuing to display all his tricks with his brilliant step, speed, passing, and goal kicking. Centre Blake Ayshford scored two tries and must be turning some heads as one of the most form outside backs in the NRL. Prime Minister Julia Gillard: Carbon Tax

It seems that Prime Minister Julia Gillard (pictured above) will continue to be accused of lying to the Australian public in the lead up to the 2010 Federal Election; with her pre-election commitment to not introduce an Australian Carbon Tax. Despite my perpetual negative view of the Australian Labor Party as a whole, I am satisfied that Prime Minister Gillard had every intention of not introducing a Carbon Tax. It is clear that with a minority government Prime Minister Gillard's hand was forced by the radical Greens Party. The Greens hide behind an environmental banner and their leader Senator Bob Brown is by surrogacy the most powerful politician in Australia, which means that our future is being determined by a radical. The Wests Tigers fifth consecutive win against the Penrith Panthers has confirmed them as one of the hottest teams in the NRL. Dave Nilsson: 1995 Starting Lineup figure

The 1995 Starting Lineup Dave Nilsson figure is a historic Australian baseball artifact. This is because it is the first Starting Lineup figure and collector card which features an Australian player. My good mate and Long Island, New York Journalist Chris R. Vaccaro kindly purchased this for me and posted it to Australia. For Australian buyers it is difficult to purchase this great artifact because many sellers in the U.S. won't ship this item to Australia. It is important to also note that the 1995 Starting Lineup figure of Milwaukee Brewer Dave Nilsson is classified as a rookie edition. Obviously Nilsson's rookie Major League Baseball season was in 1992 but the 1995 Starting Lineup figure is their first feature of him. Over the years I have accumulated a lot of Aussie baseball memorabilia but this is a special addition to my collection. Yet when it comes to Aussie baseball themed collections Queenslander Mark Klatt has the best private collection I have seen in Australia. Australian baseball memorabilia collectors should try and buy up the 1995 Nilsson figure, as it is outside the norm of baseball cards and it is clearly a first for an Australian baseball player. Wests Tigers slay the St. George Illawarra Dragons

The Wests Tigers have made it four wins on the trot by defeating the St. George Illawarra Dragons 16 - 14 at the Sydney Football Stadium. The Tigers ability to surge with field position and restrict the Dragons running game was a key to their victory. Their attacking strike power cut through the Dragons line and tries to Beau Ryan and Benji Marshall came on the back of fast and clever play. Liam Fulton continues to prove himself as a bustling second rower with a stack of tackles and a try on the back of a determined run. The battle of the big cats at Penrith's Centrebet Stadium next Friday night is an opportunity for the Tigers to make it five wins in a row. Wests Tigers cage the Manly Sea Eagles

The Wests Tigers proved last night that they can match it with any team in the NRL, by defeating the Manly Sea Eagles 14 - 12. The playing conditions at Gosford's Bluetongue Stadium presented a noticeably slippery surface. The Tigers handling of the ball in the first half lead to many turnovers and at half-time the Sea Eagles looked in control with a 12 to nil lead. But the Tigers are making a name for themselves as a second half team, and Benji Marshall had a hand in multiple line-breaks, which contributed to 14 unanswered points to make it three wins in a row. Chris Lawrence was also a standout with bullocking runs and a try. The New South Wales Blues State of Origin player resources would certainly benefit from having Lawrence on the team. The Tigers may have discovered more of their brilliant finesse, which they will need every bit of when they face the Dragons next Friday night. Cadel Evans makes Australian sporting history

Cadel Evans (pictured above) has become the first Australian to win the world's most coveted cycling event the Tour de France. His achievement is not just for Australia but also for the entire Southern Hemisphere, as he has become the first ever winner from this region. Evans was a true champion well before winning the 2011 Tour de France. He participated in the Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games in mountain biking, and since 2005 he has shined in the Tour de France, which includes placing second twice. Reading Phillies experience

Visiting the Reading Phillies, at their home ground FirstEnergy Stadium, on June 30, 2011 was a fantastic opportunity to experience a flagship venue for community orientated baseball. Tommy Viola, who is the Director of Public Relations and Media Relations for the Reading Phillies showed Chris R. Vaccaro and I (that's me pictured above and the photograph was shot by Chris) a facility that has something for everyone. Wests Tigers pluck the Sydney Roosters

The Wests Tigers notched up back to back wins by beating the Sydney Roosters 19 - 12. The traditional rugby league venue Leichhardt Oval was left damp and muddy in several spectator sections including the hill, which meant that some areas were made off-limits. The playing surface though appeared in decent condition despite two days of rain. In the first half of the game the Tigers looked set to pounce, yet they found themselves behind at the break. During the second half the Tigers played with greater purpose and outscored the Roosters to take the win. The victory was timely as the Tigers next face the Manly Sea Eagles at Gosford, where they will be hoping for three wins on the trot. Tim Kennelly Interview

On June 30, 2011 I travelled from Long Island, New York to Reading, Pennsylvania to interview Tim Kennelly (pictured above) and also Clayton Tanner. Long Island journalist and good mate Chris R. Las Vegas experience

From July 3 to July 5, 2011 I enjoyed the warm weather and bright lights of Las Vegas, Nevada. The above photograph was taken as I strolled the Vegas Strip. It is a great spot to spend a few days or a weekend. The baking desert air made time by the hotel swimming pool my favourite activity. Memphis Musical

On June 26, 2011 I attended the musical Memphis at the Shubert Theatre, on 225 West 44th Street in New York City. I took the above photograph while lining up to enter the show. The theatre has a classical feel to it with a high decorated ceiling. I found the show to be highly entertaining, and it engagingly dealt with many American social issues from the 1950s. The official brochure describes Memphis as: "From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, comes a new Broadway musical about fame, forbidden love and the birth of rock 'n' roll. You don't need to speak the language to be wowed by the dancing, entranced by the singing or feel the heat of the most electrifying new musical in town. The Tigers have displayed inconsistent form during the 2011 season, yet with seven more games to go in the season they still have time to find their best form and finish the year strongly. The ABL should aim to recruit university sports management graduates

Across Australia hundreds of university students graduate each year with degrees in sports management. The Australian Baseball League is perhaps one of the most open pathways for sports management graduates, as the ABL has a structure which supports interns and baseball is a growing sport in Australia. New York Yankees experience

On June 25, 2011 I attended my first New York Yankees game. Pictured above is a photograph I took during batting practice. With C.C. Sabathia pitching for the Yankees and clear warm weather it was an extraordinary baseball experience. But Derek Jeter was out injured for the game, which was a slight disappointment. Sitting in section 119, row 14, seat 7 I saw the game up close. C.C. was dominate and the Yankees ran away with their game against the Colorado Rockies. America and Japan holiday 2011

I have recently returned from visiting America and Japan. My trip included social and baseball engagements. From June 24, 2011 to July 5, 2011 I spent my time in America, which included stops in New York City, Long Island, Reading Pennsylvania, and Las Vegas. From July 5, 2011 to July 8, 2011 I visited Tokyo Japan, which was my first ever trip to Japan. Having visited North America in 2010 this was my second trip there in less than 12-months. Olympic Baseball: To be or not to be?

It is pleasing that lobbying is underway to have baseball reinstated for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. However, many sports in the Olympics that have fully professional leagues should be required to adopt a model similar to that of Olympic Football. Specifically, this means having a team with players under the age of 23-years old and a small number of over aged players. Baseball team rosters with 25-players could have six over age players (two pitchers and four fielding players) and the rest of the team must be under the age of 23. This type of formula has allowed Olympic Football to distinguish itself from the Football World Cup, and still provide a high standard of play. An age based format for baseball participants could certainly help the sport in its bid to return to the Olympics. Olympic Softball deserves another hit

Softball was particularly unlucky to be cut from the Summer Olympic Games program for London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016. Baseball has suffered the same fate but softball had the Olympic Games as its apex, and as a sport it does not have a major league, which makes it deserving of Olympic status. In Australia softball is played in most schools and participation rates far exceed those of baseball and many other sports. Despite this a generation of softball players around the world won't have the opportunity to participate in the Olympic Games. I am confident however that softball will return for the 2020 Olympics, but ultimately it should have never been cut from the program in the first place. Aussies excel from College Baseball

The three fastest Australians to debut in Major League Baseball all have one thing in common, they each played College Baseball in the Unites States. With Josh Spence's (pictured above) call up to the Major League Roster, with the San Diego Padres, he is now the fastest Aussie to reach this level from the Minor Leagues. In less than two seasons of professional baseball Spence is set to debut in the next few days. Craig Shipley and Jeff Williams both reached the Majors within three years of playing Minor League Baseball. Therefore the order of fastest Aussies to debut in the Majors is: (1) Josh Spence (2) Craig Shipley, and (3) Jeff Williams. There is only a few months difference between Shipley and Williams. What this clearly proves is that College Baseball is a faster pathway for Australians to reach the Major Leagues. Dave Nilsson: Who will be the next?

Dave Nilsson (pictured above) was a true baseball trailblazer for Australia, playing eight seasons of Major League Baseball with the Milwaukee Brewers, and to date he is the only Aussie All-Star. He is frequently regarded as the best catcher in Brewers history, and Australia's greatest baseball player. The question of who will be the next Dave Nilsson should always take into consideration the factors that made him the player he was, and his high achievements. Nilsson hit 105 home runs during his career, and he had two seasons where he hit 20 or more home runs. Considering that he mostly played as a catcher and had a career .284 batting average is further proof of his special talent. But Nilsson's pedigree can be attributed somewhat to his nature and nurture. To begin with, Nilsson came from an Aussie baseball family. His older brothers Bob and Gary both played some Minor League Baseball. Standing at 192 centimetres tall and 83 to 90 kilograms in weight during his playing days, Dave had the physique of a high performance athlete. When you combine Dave's family influence and his physical attributes, this set the foundations for a talented player. But it is important to remember that Australian athletes with similar physical attributes to Dave, often choose other sports ahead of baseball. Rugby league, rugby union, and Australian Rules Football are the sporting pathways that many athletes take in Australia. So with baseball behind these sports in terms of participation, baseball was lucky to secure an athlete of Dave's prowess. Therefore the question of who will be the next Dave Nilsson is difficult to answer. This is in-part due to the fact that it is rare in Australia to have a family that has such a strong disposition towards baseball. Also, through years of hard work Nilsson established himself as a genuine power hitter, and whilst Luke Hughes and Trent Oeltjen are both currently proving themselves as capable Major League hitters, Nilsson reached a higher hitting echelon than any other Aussie player has to date. With the new Australian Baseball League entering its second season and a continuous flow of Aussies in professional baseball leagues overseas, there is certainly potential for another player of Dave Nilsson's calibre. Yet I predict that such a talent can only come once every 20 or so years, as baseball in Australia is in the shadow of so many other sports, but its capacity to grow is certainly encouraging. Australian baseball pitcher Richard Thompson (pictured above) is now up to his fifth season of making a contribution at the Major League level, with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Shane Lindsay: Chicago White Sox

During the Chicago White Sox 2011 Spring Training, Australian pitcher Shane Lindsay (pictured above) made a good impression and came close to making the Major League Roster. To date no Australian has played Major League Baseball for a Chicago based team. Lindsay is currently sitting on a 0.00 earned run average at AAA level, after six innings of work. It's reasonable that he may become the first Aussie to make a Chi-Town team. Some say that his walk count is a slight worry, but it seems that he is getting the job done despite giving up some walks. It's highly possible that Lindsay may get a shot at the Big Leagues in 2011, and with the expanded roster in September I like his chances. The 29th Australian to debut in Major League Baseball is a shortlist. At the very top has to be the Detroit Tigers pitching farm hand Brendan Wise (pictured above). I actually felt that he might have got a chance during the 2010 season. After ten innings of pitching at AAA level in 2011, Wise has maintained a superb earned run average of 0.00. I believe that it is possible that multiple Aussies may play for the Tigers during the course of the season. Worst case scenario Wise should get a call-up in September with the expanded rosters. I am hopeful however that he will receive a shot at the Big Leagues well before then, which could make him the latest Aussie debutant. Grant Balfour: Oakland Athletics

Grant Balfour (pictured above) has established himself as a lightning fast Australian baseball pitcher. Confirmation of his 2011 signing with the Oakland Athletics; for over four million dollars a season, made national news headlines in Australia. The first time I saw Balfour play was with the Sydney Storm, during the 1997 / 1998 Australia Baseball League season. I remember marvelling at the speed of his pitchers. During the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games he represented Australia in baseball. On July 22, 2001 Balfour made his Major League debut with the Minnesota Twins. He also played MLB with the Twins in 2003 and 2004. Injury caused Balfour to essentially miss all of 2005 and 2006. He had a brief stint with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2007, before joining the Tampa Bay Devil Rays during the same season. Balfour had a sensational 2008 with the newly named Tampa Bay Rays, which included playing in the 2008 Baseball World Series. Since 2008 he has proved that he is a reliable set-up man or closer. Balfour's at times animated personality on the baseball field; adds some spark to tense situations. He has found a good home for himself with the Athletics; where he is making a valuable contribution to the team. Brad Thomas: Detroit Tigers

Australian baseball pitcher Brad Thomas (pictured above) is in the midst of an impressive international baseball career. He first caught my attention during the 1995 / 1996 Australian Baseball League season. As a pitcher for the Sydney Blues he managed to stop a rampaging Perth Heat in the semi-final series that was played in Sydney. The Blues won their first and only ABL Championship that season. Thomas was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995 but started his professional baseball career with the Minnesota Twins Organisation in 1996. He represented Australia in baseball at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, and he has also played for Australia at numerous international tournaments, including the 2009 World Baseball Classic. It is a credit to Thomas that he has continually made himself available for Australian duties. Playing for the Twins Thomas made his Major League debut on May 26, 2001. He also played Major League Baseball with the Twins from 2003 to 2004. In 2005 he accepted an opportunity to play in Japan for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, and he also played there in 2006. Thomas returned to the United States in 2007 where he spent the year playing AAA with the Seattle Mariners. He returned to Asia for 2008 and 2009 where he played in Korea for the Hanwha Eagles. It seems that Thomas is a determined competitor, because despite receiving a lucrative offer to play in Japan for the 2010 season, he chose to return to the U.S. for less money. It appears that the challenge to make the Detroit Tigers Major League Roster was a more enticing undertaking for him in 2010. Thomas had a successful 2010 with the Tigers; posting 6 wins and 2 losses, and an earned run average of 3.89. If anyone doubted his capability at the start of the 2010 season he certainly proved his worth. Thomas continues to play MLB with the Detroit Tigers in 2011 and complements the team with his vast pitching experience. Australians have played within the Phillies Farm System as far back as the 1980's though, such as Sydney catcher Gary White from 1987 to 1988. Aussies Brad Harman and Chris Snelling both played Major League Baseball with the Phillies in 2008, and Queensland pitcher Drew Naylor is a top prospect within their Farm System. The Phillies generally have about five Aussies within their Farm System, which is consist for the 2011 season too. In 1993 they signed Australian Rules Football player Justin Charles, and to date two Aussies have played Major League Baseball with them. The first was Mark Hutton in 1996 followed by Graeme Lloyd in 2002. Despite spending his career as a pitcher, Hutton enjoyed his time in the National League, where he had the opportunity to bat. During his MLB career he had 24 plate appearances and a lifetime batting average of .304, including one home run. The Detroit Tigers are emerging as a popular club for Australian baseball players. At present pitcher Brad Thomas is on their Major League Roster. The Tigers have had Australians within their Farm System dating back to the early 1980's. Gary Nilsson played Minor League Baseball with them in 1984 and Mark Ettles was drafted by the Tigers in 1989. Whilst the Tigers have historically not signed as many Aussie players as the Seattle Mariners or Minnesota Twins, we should expect to see plenty do so in the future, as Kevin Hooker and Glenn Williams are both scouting for the club in Australia and the Pacific. David Welch: Hurry up and sign him!

David Welch (pictured above) is a proven performer at various levels of professional baseball. He pitched a no-hitter against the Adelaide Bite in the Australian Baseball League, and was awarded best pitcher of the season. Welch has also participated in multiple no-hitters in U.S. Minor League Baseball. I am perplexed as to why Welch is still without a professional playing contract. There was some talk that Welch would play in Korea, but to date this has not eventuated. Given that one foreign pitcher in the KBO has already been released, and there are others who seem to be under performing, I believe that Welch could make a valuable contribution. It is important to remember that he has responsibilities such as his family, and there is only so long a person can maintain their lifestyle without consistent income. My worry is that Welch could be lost to the sport if he doesn't receive a sufficient opportunity soon. I sincerely hope that he does get a chance, as he will greatly reward the team who invests in him. The New York Yankees are one of the most famous sporting teams in the world. So to have had two Australians wear the pinstripes of the Yankees is a special chapter in Australian Baseball History. It is possible to round up the number of Aussies to three, with adopted Australian Pat Kelly. In 1993 Mark Hutton was the first Australian to start a Major League Baseball game as a pitcher. In 1996 and 1998 Graeme Lloyd was the first Australian to win a Baseball World Series. He is also the only Australian to have recorded a pitching win in a World Series game and the only Australian to have had an at-bat in a World Series game. In 1991 Craig Shipley became the first Australian to play Major League Baseball with the Padres, followed by Mark Ettles, Chris Oxspring, and Justin Huber. At present the Padres are equal second with the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers for number of Aussies to play on a MLB team. Atlanta Braves: Aussie Bravehearts

The Atlanta Braves patronage of Australian baseball talent dates back to the 1980's. But it was in the 1990's that the Braves set the record for the highest signing bonus for an Australian amateur free agent. In 1993 the Braves signed Glenn Williams for approximately 1.2 million Australian Dollars. So far three Australians have played Major League Baseball with the Braves. The first was Damian Moss in 2001, followed by Peter Moylan, and Phil Stockman. Moss displayed impressive form with the Braves in 2001 and 2002, and Moylan has established himself as a regular Major League player since 2006. At present the Braves have multiple Aussies within their Farm System too. Milwaukee Brewers: Aussie Brew Crew

The Milwaukee Brewers seem to like the taste of Fosters Beer, as to date four Australians have played Major League Baseball with them. The first was Dave Nilsson in 1992, followed by Graeme Lloyd, Trent Durrington, and Grant Balfour. The Brewers have recorded plenty of Australian Baseball History. In 1993 Graeme Lloyd pitched to Dave Nilsson, which made the first all-Australian battery. In 1999 Dave Nilsson was a National League All-Star for the Brewers, and in 2004 Trent Durrington was the first Australian fielding player to pitch at the Major League level. The Brewers are currently equal second with the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers for total number of Aussies to play on a single team. Generally there are one or two Australians in the Brewers Farm System, but for 2011 there appears to be none. However, it's just a matter of time before the Brewers decide that it's time for a Fosters Aussie to join their club. The Los Angeles Dodgers have remained a steady recruiter of Australian baseball players dating back to the early 1980's. Dodger blue and Australian true-blue baseballers have a noteworthy history. To date four Australians have played Major League Baseball with the Dodgers. The first was Craig Shipley in 1986, followed by Jeff Williams, Luke Prokopec, and Trent Oeltjen. Currently the Dodgers are equal second with the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers for total number of Australians to play MLB with a single team. In the 1990's the Dodgers were particularly active with the signing of Australian players. Two local factors in-part contributed to this: the first was that the Adelaide Giants in the former Australian Baseball League were affiliated to the Dodgers, and the second was that for many years Adelaide local Tony Harris scouted for the Dodgers. These days we don't see as many amateur free agent Aussies sign with the Dodgers. But there is usually one or two Australians within the Dodgers Farm System each year. Minnesota Twins: Down Under Investment

The Minnesota Twins have signed more Australian players to professional contracts than any other Major League Baseball Club. In the last twenty years the Twins have signed over fifty Australians, and more Australians have played Major League Baseball with the Twins than any other team. To date six Australians have reached the majors with the Twins. The first was Brad Thomas, then Grant Balfour, Micheal Nakamura, Glenn Williams, Justin Huber, and Luke Hughes. It seems that hardly a season passes by where there is not between five to ten Aussies in the Twins Farm System. The Twins are the greatest investor in Australian baseball talent, and I am sincerely grateful that Australia forms a constant part of their international scouting. With Luke Hughes currently on the Major League Roster and Liam Hendriks and James Beresford listed as top prospects, this proves that Australian talent is an important part of the Twins Organisation. One Australian baseball record waiting to be achieved is multiple Australians in a Major League batting line-up, and I believe that this will happen on a Twins team. Oprah Winfrey: Down Under

Oprah Winfrey's visit Down Under in late 2010 has certainly boosted American tourist interest towards Australia. Traditionally Australia has ranked highly as a desired overseas holiday destination for Americans, and the exposure from Oprah's visit has put Australia on the peripheral for many people in the United States. In my experiences the two main issues that seem to be a hesitant for Americans who want to see Australia is the cost and distance of the flight. It is important to remember that it is less distance for Americans to travel to Europe or the Caribbean. However, it seems that the relaxed and larrikin Aussie demeanour, and some of our many natural wonders are what attracts American interest. With Delta Airlines now flying to Australia, this added competition will likely help reduce the cost of a ticket to Australia. The investment that was made in Oprah by Tourism Australia and State Governments will be returned one hundred fold. The fact that the weather was superb during her visit also helps the selling credentials of Australia. Whilst there has been some minor negative reports regarding Oprah's comfort during the visit, it is important to remember that she was a long way from home and working to a very busy schedule. Her time in Australia was clearly a highly successful venture and I'm sure she will always fondly remember her visit Down Under. The next step Australia should take to promote itself in North America is to have an advertisement as part of the NFL Super Bowl coverage. This is the one event that stops the nation in the U.S., and the opportunity to reach out to every social and economic demographic of the country is there to be had. This would be one of the most expensive advertising campaigns of all-time for Australia, but it could be the most successful. Oprah has set an excellent standard and it is important to continue to sell Australia as a highly desired tourist destination. Hugh Jackman

If there was a category for a national celebrity flagship, actor Hugh Jackman (pictured above) would be the pride of the fleet for Australia. During the 1990's Jackman gained considerable momentum in Australia as a film and television actor. However, the first time I saw him perform was live at the 1999 National Rugby League Grand Final, where he sung "This Is The Moment" as part of the pregame entertainment. It was a strong performance and I remember thinking that Jackman was bound to have a big career on the stage. As it has turned out, he has had and continues to have an excellent career in film, on stage, and in television. To his credit, Jackman has proven to be a kind and wholehearted gentlemen. Jackman has superb range as an actor, earning critical acclaim in the stage performance of The Boy from Oz. Combining this with his dominate performance in films like Australia and Swordfish, has confirmed him as a true first class actor.

Peter Weir

My first introduction to Australian film director Peter Weir (pictured above), was the film Gallipoli. Starring Mark Lee and Mel Gibson, I rank it as the best Australian war film of all-time. The soundtrack seized and influenced the feelings of the audience masterfully, and the tragedy of the story is a crucial reminder of the tremendous loss of life in World War I. Weir has special talent, and it seems that he conserves his creative energy for highly memorable films. In trying to identify my favourite, I have managed to narrow it down to three: Gallipoli, Dead Poets Society, and The Truman Show. I have developed a theory that Weir is the most suitable candidate for a deep and highly impressive Australian Korean War and or a Vietnam War film, as he is gifted in making mateship a key component of his work, and this is very much a crucial component of the Australian identity in times of war and peace.

George Miller

As a film director, Australian George Miller (pictured above) has displayed outstanding range with his work. From the post apocalypse Mad Max Trilogy, to a fun loving pig named Babe and a sequel film, to the animated hits Happy Feet I and II. For me Mad Max II and III are personal favourites. The idea of the fragile existence of the human race, fighting for finite resources in lawless societies, captivated my attention. The set design and costumes were brilliant too. There is strong talk of a fourth Mad Max, and production for it may begin in 2012. It has been stated that Mel Gibson won't be part of the latest installment, but the sentimental side of me doesn't like to part ways with tradition. There was perhaps an apprehension from Miller of potentially typecasting himself with the Mad Max works, yet he has clearly achieved tremendously across many genres of film. It is interesting to note that Miller is also a qualified medical doctor.

Baz Luhrmann

When the Australian film Strictly Ballroom hit local cinemas 18-years ago, it was the pride of the nation, a Cinderella story of Aussie battlers. The classic cinema in Roseville, Sydney showed it until the film came out on video. Since then Baz Luhrmann (pictured above) has conquered the world with hits like Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, Moulin Rouge, and Australia. I visited Moulin Rouge in Paris in 2002, and I doubt I would have known of it were it not for Luhrmann. It is almost a prerequisite that I expect a Luhrmann work to contain expressive colour. Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge standout in this regard. I enjoyed Australia as Luhrmann again delivered lively colour and provided a story with so many delightful characters. I found the film to be enchanting, and I feel that it did a fine job of capturing the diversity of Australia. It is not possible for me to identify my single favourite Luhrmann film. But Strictly Ballroom and Australia are the two I enjoyed most.

Errol Flynn

No Australian made a more lasting impression in twentieth century Hollywood than Errol Flynn (pictured above). It's fair to say that he had a plentiful supply of lovers and haters, but Flynn was so much more than a boisterous man devoted to the pursuit of pleasure. Flynn was one of those rare individuals who backed his skills and instincts no matter the situation. It is this side of Flynn that most people didn't take the time to learn about. The young gold prospector pursuing a fortune in Paupa New Guinea, and getting into plenty of trouble along the way, and the ladies man world traveller who could con and get conned. Hollywood was only a well-paying game to Flynn. It wasn't until he put pen to paper covering news in civil war stricken Spain, and much later the communist revolution in Cuba that Flynn displayed his natural intelligence and sharp eye for detail. It's such a shame that Flynn died young at 50-years old in 1959, as an older and less energetic version of himself was the one most capable of realising his own potential. Numerous books written about Flynn are not worth reading. His own children hardly knew him but his wives did. Yet, his wives are not the authors of any comprehensive Flynn literature. So that leaves one book really worth reading, which is Flynn's autobiography My Wicked Wicked Ways. There are some minor details in this book that are disputed, but there is so much more which is not contested. Wilfred Burchett

Australian journalist Wilfred Burchett (pictured above) is generally regarded as a traitor and a communist. However, I feel that the greatest act of treachery was Australia's willingness to smear and disown Burchett. Based on what I have assessed so far of Burchett I do feel that he was treated in an un-Australian manner.
Burchett has cited the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima as a defining moment in his journalistic career, and his clever skills to be the first Western journalist on site and to report the devastation to the world is a true credit to him. Burchett stated that this event caused him to seek the story of "the other side" when it came to future reporting.
His methods of journalism during the Korean War were controversial as he was perceived to have interrogated Allied prisoners of war. Yet there are mixed accounts of his methods with a combination of praise and trepidation. Perhaps his involvement with these prisoners could be regarded as bad taste, but he did manage to report on the well being of these prisoners, and I am yet to be convinced with any proof that he truly compromised any of them.
The assertion that he reported Allied positions to the enemy is again contentious, and is weakened by a lack of factual evidence. He did report so-called germ warfare, which proved to be difficult to confirm. In Burchett's defence though, he was acting on accounts of people who claimed to be witnesses, and viewing sites that may have been fabricated. Despite this Burchett reported what appeared to be reasonable.
If Burchett was a communist I am confident that he wouldn't have been ashamed to admit it. He never declared himself a communist, but he did make friends with many of the world's most powerful communists. The truth of his actual allegiance was obviously left-wing and this was a helpful stance, which allowed him special access to behind the lines stories in Korea, Vietnam and Cambodia. Few Westerners were given a private audience with Ho Chi Minh and Burchett achieved this more than once.
I am prepared to argue that had Burchett lived well into the 1990's, and witnessed the fall of much of the communist world, that his own point of view towards the ideology would have altered. The systematic murder in Cambodia turned Burchett's opinion, which previously offered some support to the Khmer Rouge.
The fact that Burchett had to live an exiled life and died overseas in 1983 is a stain on the Australian persona. Burchett's son George has worked tirelessly to clear his name, and I feel that Wilfred's own testimony in the early 1980's provides significant clarity on many of his aims and motives.
I take the position that Wilfred Burchett believed he could serve an informative role by reporting news from "the other side," and he considered it his duty to provide a precise and unhindered account from a standpoint deeply immersed in his area of focus.

Bondi Beach swim

I have lived in Sydney, Australia my whole life and I have finally taken a swim at world famous Bondi Beach. On Tuesday, January 25, 2011 I did what so many tourists from around the globe instinctively do upon arriving in the Harbour City. It is possible as a young boy I might have had a swim at Bondi but I certainly have no memory of it. The sand was soft and pure and the water was so refreshing. Premier Kristina Keneally

It is not often that I offer a kind or supportive word for a State or Federal Australian Labor Party (ALP) politician. However, I must say that Kim Beazley, Bill Shorten, and Greg Combet are worthy of my respect. New South Wales (NSW) Premier The Honourable Kristina Keneally is the latest member to my list of likable ALP politicians. I'll begin with the most superficial points. Premier Keneally is by far the most attractive politician to grace NSW and Australia, with decency and intelligence to match, and still a hint of an American accent. Oh how I wish I could be her intern! Nothing will save Premier Keneally from defeat in the NSW State Election this year. A true shame that she was placed in the bridge of the Titanic with the ocean well above the deck level, such is the shamble that is NSW. Labor's perennial capacity to fail predates Premier Keneally. I imagine that she is well prepared for the inevitable landslide loss that the Labor Party will suffer in NSW. But despite this long overdue change of government I am happy to offer my chiseled muscular right shoulder for Premier Keneally to shed her tears, followed by an infinite number of warm hugs with my powerful arms wrapped around her, and my steel like corrugated upper chest as a pillow for her weary head, to shield her from the pain of defeat. David Welch throws the first No Hitter in the new ABL

Congratulations to Sydney Blue Sox ace pitcher David Welch (pictured left) for throwing the first No Hitter in the new Australian Baseball League, on February 4, 2011, in his win against the Adelaide Bite in the Delta Postseason. Welch is a class act and all season I have hoped that he will earn a new contract overseas, as he is a very talented pitcher worthy of a long career in baseball. Welch may have now created a bidding war amongst perspective employers.
To put into perspective Welch's achievement he shut down one of the most potent hitting teams in the ABL, by not allowing a hit over nine innings. In the previous version of the ABL seven No Hitters were thrown. The first was by Chip Duncan and Michael Hennessy playing with the Parramatta Patriots on November 29, 1990, and the first individual No Hitter in the old ABL was pitched by Jody Treadwell playing with the Adelaide Giants on November 21, 1991. Despite the total of seven No Hitters in the previous ABL, only one was thrown in a nine innings game, which was pitched by Matt Herges and John Challinor for the Adelaide Giants on November 7, 1998. Therefore, David Welch is the only pitcher in both versions of the ABL to throw an individual No Hitter in a nine innings game.

Wests Tigers 2011 Preview

The Wests Tigers showed in 2010 that they are a very capable team by finishing in third place, which was well ahead of many expert predictions.
As the 2011 NRL season nears the Tigers approach the season with confidence and will no doubt be rated as a decent premiership contender. To be premiers the Tigers must achieve the following:
(1) Have a regular season winning streak longer than three consecutive games. When examining past premiers a winning streak of at least five consecutive games is a reliable benchmark.
(2) A healthy team is a winning team. Tim Moltzen is a key play maker and the loss of him for 2010 was a setback, and other injuries tested the depth of the Tigers in 2010.
(3) In 2010 the Tigers played some scrappy games but still managed to win many of them. For the Tigers to be a serious contender they must be more polished, as slippery comebacks is no way to instill confidence.
(4) Reduce opposition offloads. The Tigers sometimes fail to wrap the ball up and the continued movement of the ball has been known to find gaps in the Tigers line.
(5) Improve goal line defense. The Tigers seem to have a soft underbelly close to their line and teams cashed in on this during the 2010 season.
The Tigers will be satisfied that they can improve on their 2010 season and with the nucleus of the team around for 2011, and only minor departures in the way of personnel, it is reasonable that the Tigers will be a team to watch and perhaps even the season premier.

The Australian Baseball League: Regular Season Review

Let me begin by saying that the return of the Australian Baseball League (ABL) after over a decade in hibernation was the beginning of so many achievements.

The standard of competition in the ABL proved to be competitive from first to last place. It took until the final round of the regular season for the fifth and sixth place teams to officially be statistically out of the finals race, which meant that even the team sitting at the bottom of the ladder in sixth position was still a chance going into the last week of the regular season.

ABL season one had a true international flavour with players from Asia, Europe and North America. A pleasing highlight was the regular attendance of Australians with Korean and Japanese heritage at ABL games; to see the best of our local players and the many outstanding professional Korean and Japanese players who also participated in the league.

The return of the ABL was a nice reward for so many loyal Australian baseball fans that waited patiently for the day we could all "play ball" again in a full national competition. Spectators of the game were entertained by some of Australia's best players including many with U.S. Major League experience. Trent Oeltjen, Chris Oxspring and Richard Thompson played for the Blue Sox; Justin Huber and Travis Blackley were on the Melbourne Aces team; Phil Stockman complemented the Brisbane Bandits; and Luke Hughes helped make the Perth Heat mighty.
With season finals taking place over the next two weeks the ABL has earned attention in the media and plenty of excitement for fans, as we eagerly wait to see who will be the champion of the first season of the new ABL.

The forgotten super phenomenon that grew baseball in Australia

In order for baseball to achieve its optimum success in Australia it is essential to recognise a spurt of hyper growth it once experienced, and appreciate how this previous trend should be considered for future planning of the game in Australia.
A prosperous period of time for baseball in Australia was 1992 to 1996. But perhaps one of the least recognised contributors was a super phenomenon that Australia had never previously seen and that has not occurred since. This super phenomenon was in fact a dramatic interest in American sports and American popular culture.

At the forefront was Nike, basketball and Michael Jordan, which was quickly followed by a spike in interest of American sports cards and sports memorabilia. Australia has had cricket and football collector cards for decades. Yet American sports memorabilia swept the market with insert cards and autographs. Basketball was the clear market leader of the American sports, but baseball, American Football and NHL Ice Hockey all became better known in the Australian sporting landscape. Baseball was a distant second to basketball but clearly ahead of American Football and NHL Ice Hockey.

It is more than a coincidence that the boom towards American sports, memorabilia and American popular culture: such as caps and other clothing, comfortably fits into baseball's most successful fan supported tenure in Australia. When these factors then went into decline with memorabilia shops and the like rapidly closing, it is again evident that a clear relationship existed with baseball, as it too experienced a decline from 1996 onwards.

An Australian Baseball League (ABL) Grand Final game crowd of over 13,000 in 1993 / 1994 was never again matched in any subsequent, even though there were others that had over 10,000 spectators for a Grand Final game.

The defining point is that baseball did in part ride the wave of interest towards American sports and American popular culture in the 1990's, and that baseball is unlikely to experience such a sudden surge again. This is certainly not to assert that this version of the ABL will fail. Rather, projected growth for the sport simply needs to be more conservative than what was experienced during the previous ABL growth spurt from 1992 to 1996.

The ABL has set key performance objectives to vastly increase its self-autonomy within five years. However, what causes me worry is basing targets on a previous sample (i.e. the former ABL), which experienced growth in part due to a super phenomenon.

It is therefore likely that in order for the ABL to be sustainable it will need to be underwritten by Major League Baseball for longer than the remaining four years of the current agreement.

The ABL has at least one major selling point each for domestic and overseas investors. The first is that unlike Australian soccer and basketball, the ABL does showcase some of Australia's best players from overseas, and this really needs to be thrust in the faces of domestic investors and all stakeholders. The second is making the ABL a most desired winter baseball assignment for Northern Hemisphere powerhouses. If additional investment could come from Korea, Japan and Taiwan the future of the ABL would be secure. I sincerely doubt that the ABL will ever be completely self-sustaining from just local financial means, as the Australian summer sports market is too stacked.

In closing, the ABL's long term viability permanently requires domestic and international support, and any key performance objectives for the ABL need to cautiously evaluate and even exclude data that was attributed from the super phenomenon of the early to mid-1990's, towards American sports and popular culture, as this previous growth spurt is unlikely to be replicated and in the end it proved to have some hallmarks of artificial inflation.

I predict that baseball in Australia will instead experience a slower but more sustainable growth over the next four years.

Past Olympic glory is the missing key to grow baseball in Australia

The Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games graced the Harbour City over a decade ago. And it was Olympic baseball that close to 300,000 spectators attended in Sydney. The story gets even better when Australia won a silver medal in baseball at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Baseball is no longer on the Olympic program, and won't appear in London 2012. The Australian Baseball League (ABL) Official Program features a follow up on the 2004 silver medal team. As I read this I wondered why baseball has failed to truly capitalise on an Olympic silver medal? Baseball as a sport in Australia has never had particularly deep pockets. Yet, the television advertisements for the ABL have been good, and I feel that the ABL has had an encouraging first season on all levels. But for me the key to building anything is recruitment. Baseball needs to recruit new fans and players of all ages. Many of the players on the Athens 2004 team are permanently based in Australia now. It is a reasonable assertion that the Olympic Games bridges public interest in any sport, as the Olympics is deeply woven into Australian culture. I feel that the Australian Baseball Federation (ABF) and ABL should make a stronger effort to entice the public with baseball Olympians in uniform with their medal around their necks. I appreciate that there is a cost and some bureaucracy to have these players appear in public places like shopping centres. But I am confident that if Olympians appear before the public, handing out flyer sheets on local baseball clubs and signing autographs, for four weeks leading up to the summer and winter seasons that recruitment of new fans and players will increase measurably. It disappoints me that the 2004 Olympians have been left almost idle for over six years. I again emphasis that the Olympics and Australia's success in baseball in 2004 has great currency to attract public attention. If the ABF and ABL has a budget for print media and television advertising, why is it not possible to pay Olympians for their time to appear in public for the greater expansion of baseball in Australia? If funds are as slim as often is inferred then why not ask the baseball public to make donations to help finance a national recruitment drive with silver medal Olympians as ambassadors? The Australian Baseball League season so far

The Australian Baseball League (ABL) is approaching the halfway point of the season and there is much to be pleased about. To begin with the competition is wide open and this was proven when the Canberra Cavalry swept the Adelaide Bite, which saw a team sitting in last spot beat a team in equal first position three times. Then there is an A-List of players with a decent number on each team. The Melbourne Aces currently have Justin Huber and Travis Blackley on their active roster and both have U.S. Major League experience. From late December it is expected that other Australian players with U.S. Major League experience will become available. The only thing that has dampened recent fixtures was the weather. Considering that the Canberra Cavalry represent the lowest populated city in the ABL - yet they have the best attendance when it comes to average crowds, and an impressive venue, leads me to believe that if the ABL decides to expand in the future it may be worth highly considering the viability of a team in Lismore and Alice Springs. These two locations have excellent baseball participation with venues built for baseball, and there is no competition from other sporting codes in terms of professional teams based in these places during the summer months. The 2010 / 2011 ABL season is only going to get better as the season goes on. Great to see the Australian Baseball League (ABL) back in Sydney. A decade of waiting presented a tight game that the Blue Sox won by scoring the only run in the game. I'm sure it has already been considered and probably planned but temporary seats are urgently needed at Blacktown Olympic Park. If there had of been 10,000 seats I'm confident that many people would have turn out to watch. The rain didn't stop the night from happening and I'm sure fans of baseball in Australia are going to see some excellent games this summer. It has struck me with a thud that I'm trying to change many aspects of my life all in one go. To begin with there is location; somewhere new to live would be nice. The question of when is answered by another factor mentioned below. Then there is study. The good news is I have received an offer to undertake a Masters program - but I have other offers I'm waiting on so the wheel is still going around there. Last but certainly not least is work. Something new or something old? Income as opposed to my savings makes the change of location so much easier, and university costs less of a hit. These three factors have varying levels of weight to them. I'll be really pleased with myself if I can take care of the lot in the next few months; it all seems very possible and will be even better when I'm there! The Australian Baseball League (ABL) has had an excellent week with the official launch of the competition and a decent amount of media exposure. Various television commercials have also hit the airways over the last six months and the ABL certainly deserves praise for such a professional and enthusiastic new chapter for baseball in Australia. Baseball is not the only American sport in Australia on the comeback, as in the National Basketball League the Sydney Kings are back! It would be nice if the tone of the latest ABL venture focused on a newer better product based on years of planning and lessons learnt from the last league, as some media reports describe the current version of professional baseball in Australia as a last chance for a national league. There is no doubt that the sporting calender in Australia is very tight with competition but it is clear that the ABL has a determined focus towards growth and sustainability. The partnership the ABL has with the U.S. Major League Baseball adds considerable weight towards the new drive of baseball in Australia.
