Australian tennis is out of the wilderness with a newly crowned Queen. Sam Stosur (pictured above) from the Sunshine State Queensland, defeated American super player Serena Williams 6-2, 6-3 to win the 2011 US Open. It has been 34-years since an Australian woman has won the US Open Singles Title, and it is Stosur's first Singles Grand Slam win. As a Doubles player Stosur won the US Open in 2005 and the French Open in 2006. Stosur's team skills are further confirmed by her Mixed Doubles wins, which includes the 2005 Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2008. 2011 is proving to be a great year for Australian athletes competing on the world stage.
